Borchardt was a born sailor. He graduated from a naval academy in 1931, then sailed as a navigation officer on passenger ships between the port of Gdynia and the Americas. When the German army invaded Poland and the second world war started, Berchard was serving on board the ship Daru Pomorza which remined in the port of Stockholm until the war’s end. Berchardht however left for England and joined in the war fleet as a navigator on the ship Pilsudski. This ship was hit by a torpedo, but wounded Borchardt survived. After the war, he returned to Poland and until his retirement in 1970, he thought at the naval academy. He was a outstanding teacher, who brought into the classroom his many seagoing experiences. In his time, the saying in Gdynia was that in this city are liv only people that were thought by Borchardt, are thought by Borchardt, or will be thought by Borchardt. He wrote some outstending books about ships and the people on the ships. His book “Kapitan” made him famous around the world. Captain Borchardt died on May the 20th 1986. We, his students and students of his students sometimes dream that he will someday invite us for a cup of tea into his cabin on Daru Pomorza, into his world, which has enriched us so much.
