We do not know for sure whether Joshua had a blue nose. He came from a Canadian island where the sailors were called “Blue Noses”. The island is Nova Scotia. Having grown up by the sea, he followed the local customs and, as a young man, went to the sea. He sailed on many ships, and, from the lowest position as a deck boy, he, after many years of hard work, reached the rank of a captain. Once back on land, he saw an opportunity in an wrecked ship on the beach. He salvaged the lumber and from it he built himself a new sailboat which he called “Spray”. The legend says that the Blue Noses were the masters of the sea faring craft. In 1895, the old sea dog left Boston on his sailboat Spray on a solo journey around the world. He was the first one to make it, and three years later, when he reached the coast of North America, he received a grand welcome. He wrote a book about his trip and named it “Alone on a ship around the world”. After reading his book, one may get the impression that his sailing was easy. What also becomes clear is that Slokum did not fight the sea but lived with it in a selfless partnership and respect. In 1909, Joshua Slokum sailed once again into the Atlantic. He was never heard of again and fifteen years later was declared dead. Nowdays, we, the children of his spirit can listen to his voice in the whisper of the waves.
